Nazareth College have a strong and expanding reputation for music and drama within the wider Catholic education community, but was finding it difficult to market this position due to the limitations of its existing hall being shared between Physical Education and Performing Arts. The School Board, administration in conjunction with the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne deemed crucial to develop a dedicated performance and gathering space to support Nazareth College’s ambitions for this discipline. Tony Cotter, Director of Cotter Reid Architects worked closely with the client to develop a scheme that was fit-for-purpose, value-for-money, low maintenance, energy efficient and timely. Stage One developed a new multi-purpose sports hall, complete with classrooms, office, weights room, sports hall & amenities, with an abundance of storage options. Stage Two re-oriented and redeveloped the existing sports hall to provide a dedicated performing arts centre, to accommodate the entire school body (over 1000 people); a Band Room for orchestral or large group rehearsal; Practice Rooms with recording capabilities; Dance Studio with sprung timber floor; Music theory classrooms; “Black Box” performance area, complete with automated curtain runs, lighting grid and audio-visual control stations and Control Desk, facilitating the teaching of the technical side of Theatre.
