A pending progression to nine streams drove Mazenod College to expand their existing Senior School complex, whilst affording them the opportunity to create innovative, flexible, IT-rich learning spaces that not only supported current pedagogical needs, but also provided a Tertiary-style learning environment.
The complexity in the project lay in the requirement to keep the existing complex operational whilst extending to meet future needs. Careful planning of construction staging, site access, maintenance of emergency services, safety plans for student, staff and community access had to be undertaken, including effective acoustic and dust separation between areas.
The aesthetic approach adopted was to continue the theme previously applied across the College’s campus. As such the building incorporates similarly dynamic forms, reflecting a progressive academic and social philosophy. The materials employed are low maintenance and long-lasting, and include expansive areas of copper cladding, precast concrete, metallic siding and energy efficient glazing.
