Andragogy (adult learning) is a theory that holds a set of assumptions about how adults learn. Andragogy uses approaches to learning that are problem-based and collaborative rather than instructional, and also emphasises more equality between the teacher and learner. Technology has been pivotal in enabling andragogy in new ways. The Deakin at Your Doorstep concept links classrooms around the state in real time with a high level of interactivity. Deakin University students can watch the lecturer, presentations and each other as well as participate in discussions in different locations. Cotter Reid Architects designed a series of class rooms around Victoria that enabled this exciting concept while balancing needs of students, lecturers, acoustic, audio and video requirements all within dynamic real world learning spaces. This innovative approach to learning and design commenced in 2009 and was adopted progressively across sites including Swan Hill, Gippsland, Bairnsdale, Rosebud as well Deakin University Burwood, Warrnambool, Geelong Waterfront and Waurn Ponds Campuses.
