About This Project

Coastal towns in Victoria are becoming increasingly suburban in nature with standard subdivisions overtaking coastal farmland. Cleverly, two pavilions were designed by Cotter Reid Architects’ Director Wayne Reid as self-contained residences in Torquay. The smaller pavilion contains two bedrooms, bathroom, study and open light filled living and kitchen area. This pavilion can be rented as holiday accommodation or easily transformed into a home office or granny flat. The main pavilion house is detached and accommodates a family with three bedrooms and several living spaces including an intimate “round room” within a double brick cylinder at the centre of the house. The masonry cylinder also provides a study on the upper level.  Details throughout both buildings draw from characteristics of the Surf Coast environment; banded polychrome brickwork suggests beachside cliffs; ceramic wall tile patterns both inside and out mimic the shiny interior of abalone shells and timber decks are inspired by platforms used to view daily surf conditions.
